Overview of IISER

Government of India has created some institutes to promote the researches and education in the sciences. One of those institutes is IISER (Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research). This is a leading institute imparting the knowledge and education in different fields of science. There are five branches of IISER established all over the country. The five locations are Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, Mohali in Punjab, Pune in Maharashtra, and Kolkata in West Bengal. Each institute of IISER has an expenditure of Rs.500 crore for its initial five years. The institute at Kolkata started functioning from Kharagpur, the Kolkata Extension center of IIT, IISER of Pune started from NCL campus Pune and that of Mohali from Chandigarh (MGSIPA complex) and IISER Thiruvananthapuram from College of Engineering, Trivandrum. They will soon have their own campus in near future. A new campus is being constructed for IISER Pune in a vast land of 100 acres at Pashan, Pune. The campus for IISER Kolkata will soon be ready at Haringhata, Kalyani at a huge land of over 250 acres. Similarly, the campus of IISER Mohali will settle in Mohali, Punjab.

IISER Thiruvananthapuram

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research IISER, Thiruvananthapuram is a state-of-the–art institute of science education and scientific research meeting all the international standards. IISER –TVM was established by Indian Government in the year 2008 through Ministry of Human Resource Development. The Scientific Advisory Council recommended its establishment. It is a self-directed institution offering a MS degree as well as Ph.D degrees in Biology, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, and inter-disciplinary field. The institute emphasizes to develop fortitude of research in different disciplines from the start itself.

Management

The Governing bodies of IISER-TVM are:

- Prof E. D. Jemmis working as a director.

- M. R. S. Rao, the director of Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore.

Admission

There are certain requisites to get an admission in IISER-TVM. If the candidate seeks for an admission in MS programs he/she must have completed his/her 10+2 course successfully. The performance in KVPY and ranks obtained in IIT-JEE exams influence the admissions.

All the MS based programs are focused on the fundamental sciences and are research oriented. The different workings of the program are designed in such a manner that a graduate of the institute is inspired to take up science as his/her career. Besides, the institute makes the students so very trained and skilled that they could pursue any of their favorite fields as career.

Campus

ISER-TVM at present is running in the building of college of engineering Trivandrum (CET), in the department of computer science in Thiruvananthapuram. The own stable campus for IISER Thiruvanthapuram is under construction in Vithura on the land over 200 acres. The institute is supposed to move in its permanent campus in Vithura August 2011. It is at the distance of about 40 Kms from TVM and its serene and peaceful environment in proximity of Western Ghats is perfect for teaching and research.
